Where to Stay in Lima

Lima is a city with 10 million inhabitants, and how could it be otherwise, there are thousands of alternatives on where to sleep in the city. In this post we will focus only on the three districts that most travelers visit: Miraflores, San Isidro and Barranco. Besides having the best hotels, they are the safest areas, so we recommend staying in them.

The classification is structured with respect to price and quality of service. We know firsthand some of these places, for those who do not, we rely on the comments of their clients in pages like Tripadvisor or other related forums.

Hotels in Miraflores

Among the cheap accommodation that we can recommend in the popular district of Lima there are several hostels around the S / 30-40 (about 10 euros). They are usually sued mainly by young people looking for a place without too many pretensions, but with a fun and pleasant atmosphere.

It is undoubtedly the best option for backpackers or tourists who just want to stay for a couple of days in Lima and who will follow their route to Machu Picchu or the north of the country without focusing much on the capital.

Near the famous Huaca Pucllana is the colorful Ekeko Hostel, the work of several designers, with a pleasant and youthful atmosphere. The place is pretty quiet, nestled in one of the most beautiful residential areas of Miraflores. The price of the shared room is approximately S / 30 (US$ 9). They include services like wifi, parking, breakfast, among others. facebook.com/ekekohostel/

Flying Dog Hostel Lima is a charming place located in the popular Kennedy Park of Miraflores. From this location you can take buses to the city center  or to Barranco district and it is "close" to everything if you decide to take a taxi (about S / 13 to downtown, and about S / 6 to Barranco).

It is highly recommended to avoid rush hour (8.00-9.00 am and 6.00-7.00 pm) so as not to despair in traffic. The price of this hostel is around the S / 30 (US$ 9) and has spaces with computers with wifi, billiards, table football and bar. Being in the middle of Kennedy Park can hear horns and traffic from the outside, so it is not a good option if you are looking to be silent. Breakfast is complimentary and served in an outdoor area. www.flyingdogperu.com

Among them, the Hotel Runcu ***, a pleasant space located next to a quiet park very close to the sea. We recently visited the place and although it has a decoration that we could call minimalist, we believe that it is one of the best options value for money options to stay in Lima. Another mid-range hotel that stands out is the classic Hotel Ariosto ***, which has a pompous colonial decoration typical of the 'City of Kings'. Located in the heart of Miraflores, very close to the famous Kennedy Park, restaurants areas and also the Surquillo Market, a place to taste a good traditional ceviche with one of the most accessible prices of the neighborhood.

The service and breakfasts are highly recommended. As a comment to take into account, while their vintage and antique touch is part of their charm, perhaps they should invest a little in modernizing their facilities. The simple room has a price of approximately S / 390 (US$ 120). www.hotelariosto.com.pe

We have just take a tour of backpackers hostels and cheap hotels, but if you are coming to Lima on business or with a bigger budget, we also want to propose some more exclusive options. The following hotels are the most recognized and awarded nationally and internationally, many of them from big companies like JW Marriot, Hillton or Radisson. Here are some of our recommendations:

Probably JW Marriott Hotel Miraflores is for its location and amenities that deserves to top this list of exclusive hotels. It is located at the beginning of José Larco Avenue and in front of the Larcomar shopping center, with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

It has a restaurant that offers different kinds of preparation of ceviche, pisco sour and other 100% Peruvian dishes. It also has large meeting rooms, gym, swimming pool and executive and deluxe rooms with sea views. The price of an executive room should be around the S / 600 (US$ 185). www.marriott.com

Hotel Radisson deserves a place in the list of exclusive hotels. Located in an excellent location 7 minutes walking from Kennedy Park and about 10 minutes from Larcomar. Superior rooms have views of the city and the sea, with a classic but moderate decor.

The suites have rest areas and there are two swimming pools, one outside and another on the roof next to a restaurant that offers Peruvian 'fusion' food and other dishes such as sushi or Japanese makis. Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores is one of the best options of this hotel chain that owns several establishments in Peru and, like the rest, it emphasizes the careful attention that is given to the guests. Located in a strategic place only 2 km from La Huaca Pucllana and the great majority of the attractions of the heart of Miraflores, the rooms have robust structures with wooden beams and all the comforts.

Suites have whirlpools, saunas, kitchens or living rooms. The hotel also has a restaurant, parking, gym, sauna and indoor swimming pool. From about S / 400 (US$ 123). www.casa-andina.com

Another of the most outstanding options among executives visiting Lima is the Belmond Miraflores Park Plaza, which has a privileged location on the district's seafront, with breathtaking views of the Pacific and just minutes walk to attractions such as Larcomar or the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) located in the neighboring district of Barranco.

The hotel's attention is personalized, with an executive lounge, swimming pool overlooking the ocean and gym. Prices range from the S / 1,100 forward (US$ 340+). www.belmond.com/miraflores-park-lima

Our fifth recommendation is the Hilton Miraflores Hotel, from the popular Hilton luxury hotel chain. As the rest of the hotels mentioned have a careful personalized attention and a neat restaurant where fusion food is served and you can make a rich Tea Time in the afternoon.

Its location also places it in a beautiful place of Miraflores, very close to all the attractions and with the luck to have in the same street with three of the most delicious restaurants of Lima: Ámaz (Amazonian food); Los Bachiche (Italian food with Peruvian fusion); and Papacho's (gourmet burgers). It also has a nice swimming pool in the attic. Prices from the S / 730 (US$ 225). www3.hilton.com
